Built between 1413 and 1441, reputedly by John Sely, Bishop of Down, Kilclief is the earliest datable tower house in County Down. It stands four storeys high with two projecting turrets joined at roof level by a high machicolation arch used to drop missiles on unwelcome visitors, a design later copied at nearby Jordan's and Audley's castles.
