Likely built by Hugh de Lacy alongside Carlingford Castle on the opposite shore, Greencastle guarded the narrow entry channel of Carlingford Lough and the ferry crossing between the two. Held by Richard de Burgh's forces through the 14th century, attacked by Edward Bruce in 1316, it was eventually abandoned after Cromwellian bombardment.
