The ancestral seat of the O'Cahan clan, who ruled the area for centuries until Sir Donnell O'Cahan was implicated in treason in 1607 and fled during the Flight of the Earls. The present castellated structure largely dates from 1836, built by Robert Ogilby, and later served as a US Army billet during the Second World War and a popular dance hall in the 1950s–60s hosting acts such as Tom Jones.
