A dramatic 13th-century Norman castle built in 1269 by Robert de Ufford, Justiciar of Ireland, with four D-shaped corner towers and a twin-towered gatehouse. Besieged repeatedly by the O'Conor kings of Connacht who eventually held it for two centuries, it was later modernised under Tudor rule before being dismantled by Cromwellian forces in 1652 and finally burned in 1690.
