Built in 1624 by Lady Jane Forbes near Newtownforbes, Castle Forbes is the ancestral seat of the Forbes family, Earls of Granard, and remains the family seat today. Remodelled in castellated Gothic style in the 1830s, it stands on the banks of the River Shannon.
