The castle
Originally built in 1277 for Edward I, Ruthin Castle passed through the de Grey family and Henry VII before falling into ruin; the surviving 19th-century mansion built onto the medieval remains was converted into a hotel in the 1960s, hosting the Prince of Wales en route to his 1969 investiture.
